About Cocos Islands
The Cocos Islands, not to be confused with Cocos Island near Costa Rica, consist of 27 islands with a total surface of less than 6 square miles. In 1826 Javanese and Sumatran seamen and seawoman arrived here. In 1984 the people of the islands chose to be part of Australia. The Malaysian people live on the Home-island, the Australians on West Island. The total number of inhabitants is around 600 people. Cocos inspired Charles Darwin to shape his theory about the origin of coral atolls.
Diving Cocos Islands
Around the Cocos Islands, close to the beaches, you will find walls and drop-offs, but also shallow plains and sheltered dive spots in the lagoon. The area is known for its large Pelagian fish, like reef sharks, rays, turtles and Napoleon fish.
