Australia through the eyes of an Australian

Aussie Girls.jpg

That 1.5 kilogram of travelguide in your backpack will still come in handy. You can't ask people on the street every little detail. But the best traveltips often come from locals, not guides. And that's why we're very pleased with Kelly Van Der Kolk, an Australian diver willing to share her knowledge on Diveheads. First she checked our descriptions of Australian destinations and corrected our piece on Cairns. Then she provided input on Byron Bay en Julian Rocks. And she doesn't stop there...

Diveheads visits Indonesia and Malaysia

malaysia-holidays.jpg

It is our goal to forget about goals! We are building Diveheads to forever expand, and we thank the people who help us do just that. Diveheads currently comes in two fine languages: Dutch and English. Currently we offer the most content in Dutch. Translator Melissa Geijp is helping us to correct this injustice. She translated our descriptions of Malaysian and Indonesian scuba diving destinations.

Diveheads expands into Australia

adia-2007-09-13-DSC-7019-kangaroo-face-against-sky-australia-phillip-island-cringel.com.jpg

Today the Diveheads database has entered Australia. Freelance translator and copywriter Patrick Bakker took the Dutch texts and turned them into English. Right now we cover Cairns, Port Douglas and the Great Barrier Reef on the eastcoast; Exmouth, Coral Bay and Ningaloo Reef on the westcoast; Christmasisland and the Cocos Islands off the mainland. Go check them out and leave your comments! Want to add a missing destination? Just let us know.

Diveheads: information from divers like you

Here we are then! From today Diveheads is online: a website with information about dive holiday destinations. Just like all the others? No, not at all. Diveheads is not trying to sell you a holiday. And we don’t advertise for diving holiday companies. On Diveheads we offer a platform for divers to share their travel experiences. Here you will find unembellished information, from divers like you.

Koh Tao

Backpackers nirvana and license factory

On the island Koh Tao – also referred to as Ko Tao – it’s all about diving. Nowhere in the world are obtained more PADI Open Water certificates. Little fault can be found with Koh Tao. The water, the diving costs, the life on the shore: it’s all great.

About Koh Tao
Diving schools are abundant on Koh Tao. On the boat to the island plenty of  flyers are pressed into your hands.  Do not hurry to choose.  For your own fun it is important to pick a diving school that fits your desires. For a cheap course you can go for one of the larger diving schools, often including accommodation. You will then receive classes in large groups, often somewhat hastily.  Many backpackers choose for this option to obtain their certificate in 4 days for a bargain and then continue travelling.  For a more relaxed diving experience it is better to find a smaller diving school and pay a bit more. And even then it is not expensive.

Accomodation
The ferry drops you off in Mae Haad. At the harbour the pick-up’s are waiting to bring you to your accommodation. Dairee Beach is the first choice for people that want to live it up at night. Along the beach you will find restaurants, bars and bungalows. The real budget bungalows are up the hills inland. If you prefer a less crowded place – but at night still want to drive to Mae Haad and Sairee on a rented scooter – then you would best find a small bay at the west coast of the island. At the east coast the bays are the most beautiful, but also the hardest reachable. Ao Leuk offers Koh Tao’s nicest beach and the best place to swim and snorkel. The satellite island Nang Yuan is a great option if you are looking for luxury on a photogenic spot.

Diving Koh Tao
In the bays around Koh Tao you can find many fun dive spots with gorgeous coral and fascinating rock formations. Many of these spots are not too deep and sheltered: that too makes Koh Tao an attractive spot to go into diving. Chumpon Pinnacle is known as the best dive spot of the region. This spot is located about 7 miles from the coast though, not suitable for beginners and unreachable when the water is turbulent.

Koh Tao summed up
Fast and inexpensively obtaining your diving certificate? At night out on the town with a colourful group of people of many nationalities? Every day on the boat of a relaxed diving school, every night sleeping for a bargain with full view over the island? Endless days in a wonderful resort at a heavenly little bay? Koh Tao is what you make of it.
