About Hurghada
Hurghada, once a small fishing village, now stretches along 40km of the Red Sea coast. A hub for diving enthusiasts and sun-worshippers alike, it has its own international airport with connections to Cairo and several European cities. Accommodation in Hurghada will meet everyone’s needs and budget: from modest hotels and guest houses to 5-star luxury hotels and all-inclusive family resorts. The downside to Hurghada being such a popular destination is that it can sometimes attract unruly types. These people have little interest in diving so it shouldn’t deter you from enjoying this diving paradise.
Downtown Hurghada
Hurghada is divided into three distinct areas: El Dahar is the old town which boasts the town’s largest bazaar. Here you will find a taste of authentic Egypt with souks and fishermen hangouts and local shops. Sekala is the harbour area, where tourism flourishes. This district has 20km of hotels, shops, malls, cinemas, restaurants and nightclubs all open ‘til late. El Korra Road is the newest and most modern district in Hurghada.
Diving Hurghada
Hurghada is one of the main scuba diving destinations of Egypt. It is a central access point to diving sites throughout the Red Sea. Diving in Hurghada can get crowded, with some dive sites having in excess of 20 boats vying for a spot. The many islands lying off the coast of Hurghada offer countless wonderful diving opportunities.
Careless Reef
Careless Reef is the most exposed of all the dive sites and as such is only accessible on calm days. It consists of a drop off offering large pelagic fish and sharks, as well as, beautiful gardens with large table corals. Unfortunately, the Crown of Thorns starfish has left its mark.
Small Giftun Island
The eastern side of Small Giftun Island offers great diving: wall dives and plateau dives where you will see among others; Gorgonian fans, hammerheads, Giant Morays, Blue-spotted Rays and even some old Roman pottery!
The Aquarium
For sightings of enormous schools of reef fish, such as banner fish, visit Abu Rimata and Ota Abu Rimata.
