Australia through the eyes of an Australian

Aussie Girls.jpg

That 1.5 kilogram of travelguide in your backpack will still come in handy. You can't ask people on the street every little detail. But the best traveltips often come from locals, not guides. And that's why we're very pleased with Kelly Van Der Kolk, an Australian diver willing to share her knowledge on Diveheads. First she checked our descriptions of Australian destinations and corrected our piece on Cairns. Then she provided input on Byron Bay en Julian Rocks. And she doesn't stop there...

Australia is the classic backpackers' destination. Alot of people travel to and around this huge country. But when it comes tod diving, they often limit themselves to the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef.  On their trip across the continent they miss once-in-a-lifetime diving opportunities like Ningaloo Reef. There are many diving destinations that don't have the 'Great Barrier fame', but do offer worldclass divespots, often less crowded. So are you planning to visit Australia? Local Kelly Van Der Kolk will point you in the right direction!

Port Douglas

Village at the edge of the Great Barrier Reef

Port Douglas offers an alternative for divers that want to explore the Great Barrier Reef, but find Cairns too busy.

About Port Douglas
Port Douglas lies about 66 km (40 miles) north of Cairns. The village has just over 1000 inhabitants. About 3000 tourists are added to that during high season from May to September. In Port Douglas you can privately rent a house. Also you will find resorts and hotels. Several diving operators offer daytrips and live-aboards to the Great Barrier Reef.
