Angra dos Reis
Angra dos Reis is a simple town at little over 100 miles south of Rio de Janeiro. It is situated in the middle of the Costa Verde (green coast) and is a starting point for diving around the 365 islands that are spread out before the coast.
Sleeping under the stars
To arrive in Angra you take a bus from Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo. You can look for a hotel in Angra, or take a ferry to Ilha Grande, the largest island from the bay. There you will find many pousadas where you will get a room for two for 60 euro. On the island is only one real village, Abraão, but the nice and cheap pousadas you will find anywhere. Most of the pousadas arrange diving trips to the popular spots. Far away from ‘civilization’ the starry nocturnal sky is just as breathtaking as life underwater.
Diving in the Bay of Kings
The area around Angra dos Reis is rather extensive. Therefore there are numerous diving possibilities and it is hardly ever crowded at a dive spot. The water is mostly clear, except after it has rained, and the temperature is around 73 degrees Fahrenheit. Except many many star fish and other fish you can encounter anything under water. Turtles, dolphins, but also shipwrecks from 1860 (in Araçatiba) and a helicopter at 23 feet (in Laje Matariz). There are many diving schools, but it is also possible to rent a boat and equipment and explore the region by yourself.
