Cayo Largo del Sur

Peace, tranquillity and great diving

An island paradise, perfect for lovers of beach holidays and water sports. Discovered by Christopher Columbus on his second voyage to the New World.

About Cayo Largo
Cayo Largo is a limestone island which lies about 177km south of Havana. It is the second-largest island in the archipelago De Los Canarreos. The island offers 25km of white sandy beaches surrounded by calm, azure water. Most of the beaches are “clothing optional”. Between May and October giant sea turtles come onto Playa Tortuga beach to lay their eggs in the warm sands. Eggs are collected and taken to the nearby turtle farm for incubation. Nightlife is limited to the few bars, clubs and shows at the “all-inclusive” hotels on the island. You can get to Cayo Largo by domestic and in some cases direct flights.

Diving Cayo Largo
Beautiful coral reefs, close to the surface, provide a haven for a great variety of fish. The diverse dive sites offer walls, drop-offs, reefs and wrecks. Unfortunately, the wrecks are somewhat barren with very little in the way of growth and marine life. Diving is best on the northern end of the island, where the water is clear. Water at the southern end tends to be cloudy. Excursions are possible to nearby Cayo Rico, where molluscs abound; Cayo Iguana, home of these huge reptiles and Quinto Canal, an enormous sandbar.

Cayo Largo Summary
Lazy, laid-back island with impressive underwater beauty. Top dive sites: Las Rabirrubias, Canal de la Barracuda, Punta de Barrera
