Dahab

Relaxed jumping in point for shore dives

In the early 1970’s, Dahab was a small trading post in an oasis and popular with hippies. The laid-back feel is still evident, even though the diving industry is in full swing.

About Dahab
Multistorey apartment complexes, western shopping malls and fast food chains can’t be found in Dahab, but as holidaymaker you are one of Dahab’s most important sources of income and you can’t help but feel it. The restaurants, bars and shops along the boulevard are obviously directed at the tourists. Veer a little away from the boulevard and you encounter the authentic - and considerably cheaper - eating places. The dyed-in-the-wool backpacker, doing it off his own bat, stays at a simple pension and eats for next to nothing. Those who desire certainty and comfort arrange their accommodation, in one of the hotels or resorts, in advance. Dahab is about an hour’s drive from Sharm el-Sheikh airport.

Diving Dahab
Diving in Dahab is mainly shore diving. Nearby the town lie a few reefs perfect for diving and snorkelling. Most of the spots, including the highlights, are a little further along. Therefore, on most dive days, you’ll be taking a ride in a jeep or converted pick-up. Time is of little consequence, with delays of more than half an hour not uncommon. Lunch between the morning and afternoon dives will take place in a primitive restaurant on the water: a low table, some cushions on the ground, in the shade of a stretched cloth and a simple cooked meal.

Things to do
For nightlife don’t go to Dahab. All told, there are two places where you can drink alcohol. Given that, every night is definitely enjoyable: because of the limited choice all the western dive professionals and tourists go to one or other of these bars. Due to the constant wind, kite and wind surfing are exceptional in Dahab: the lagoon is safe and free of wash, or to get wash go outside of it. To experience the desert life take a safari on a camel, horse, jeep or quad bike. A car trip will take you to St Catherine’s monastery on Mt Sinai. If you go: choose sunrise or sunset for most awe-inspiring view.

Dahab Summary
Relaxed atmosphere. Good low-budget possibilities. Top dive spots: Blue Hole and Canyon.
