Guanacaste - the most northwestern province of Costa Rica - is ideal for whom apart from diving likes beach holidays, trekking through the rainforest and sports like rafting, surfing and windsurfing. The area is an ecological goldmine with huge forests, volcanoes and an enormous amount of wild animal species. In the city of Liberia there’s an international airport that hosts flights from all over the world, but of course mostly from the US.
Diving in Guanacaste
The corals and reefs may not be plentiful and spectacular here, but that is amply compensated by the sheer variety of fish, soft corals and rock formations. One of the best dive spots is Playa del Coco. Not by accident is boasts a well developed infrastructure for tourism, with many restaurants, shops and bars and an exciting nightlife. Under water you will encounter manta rays, sea turtles, sharks, dolphins and even whales. That is true by the way for most of the spots in the Gulf of Papagayo. From Playa del Coco you can take a boat to Catalina island or Murcielago island, where the marine life is even more diverse.
