Guardalavaca
Arguably the best resort area in the eastern half of Cuba, Guardalavaca, which means “watch the cow”, encompasses the small town and beach which bear its name, as well as, the series of beaches north of Holguin.
About Guardalavaca
Situated about 50km north of Holguin, Guardalavaca is a rival to Varadero as Cuba’s top vacation destination. Possibly more beautiful, and certainly less commercialised, with tropical vegetation, white sands and turquoise seas. Many well-established, all-inclusive resort hotels overlook some of the finest beaches in Cuba.
Diving Guardalavaca
Guardalavaca has about 12 dive sites and is well-known for its abundant and vibrant sponges. Excellent sites include El Canon de los Aguajies, Boca de las Esponkas (Mouth of the Sponges) and El Salto (the Waterfall). Cave divers will enjoy Los Tanques Azules, a series of submerged caves.
Other Activities
The many beautiful beaches and tiny coves are the resort’s main attractions. Horseback riding is a favourite past time for many tourists. A dozen nature preserves are situated around Guardalavaca, one of which is an UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve.
