La Paz
The biodiversity here is enormous. The marine life is a mix of the Caribbean, the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.
About La Paz
The town of La Paz lies on the west coast of the Baja California Peninsula, in a large bay in the Sea of Cortez. Tourism is an important source of income, yet the inhabitants do their best to preserve the old traditions. The restaurants and bars in the town are frequented by the locals as well as the tourists. The most beautiful beaches are to the north of La Paz, with both long sandy beaches and small inlets. You can fly to either Mexico City or Guadalajara, from whence it is still a 2 to 3 hour flight to La Paz.
Diving La Paz
Near La Paz are the most northerly coral reefs of the Pacific Ocean. The marine life here is often compared to the Caribbean Sea, to which the Sea of Cortez was long ago connected. This comparison does not do it justice: the biodiversity here is much greater. Apart from the Caribbean influences, you also see similarities with the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Thus the nickname of La Paz: the aquarium of the world.
Less crowded than the east coast
The west coast of Mexico is heavily subjected to waves. The Sea of Cortez is sheltered by the Baja California Peninsula and therefore has no wave action. Given that diving tourism is less on the west coast of Mexico, the marine life has less to endure. The chance is great that you will see whales, manta-rays, hammerheads or turtles. Near Los Islotes you can dive in the middle of a seal colony. The pups are playful, pulling on your fins and knocking on your mask.
La Paz summary
If you want a holiday where you will see many large and extraordinary animals, then this is the place for you. Life in the Sea of Cortez varies greatly, so choose a season that suits you best.
