Playa Giron
In 1961, an army of Cuban exiles based, in the US, invaded Cuba, upon the shores of this beach, in order to overthrow Castro’s revolutionary government. They were defeated in less than 72 hours. Today this beach is a favourite for snorkellers and scuba divers.
About Playa Giron
Playa Giron is a beach on the eastern side of the Bay of Pigs and lies about 114km from Havana. Cruising yachts are forbidden on the entire Bay of Pigs, a legacy from the invasion of 1961. With a population of about 100 residents, most of whom work in and around the resort hotels, Playa Giron is a small resort.
Diving Playa Giron
There are about 12 dives sites around Playa Giron. Visibility is great at most sights, reaching 20-40m. Shore dives are popular to access the sheer drop-offs where you will find an amazing number of swim-throughs. An abundance of corals, sponges and gorgonians provide refuge for plentiful reef fish. Barracuda and groupers can also be spotted. Punta Perdiz 2 is a popular dive site which has many small caves. El Jaruco is a site for deep diving and experienced divers. Here lies a wreck, from which the site gets its name. Cenote diving at Cueva de los Pesces which is halfway between Playa Giron and Playa Larga.
