Puerto Viejo
Puerto Viejo stands for sun, sea, sand and parties. Diving tourism is not very big here but that doesn’t make the diving any less attractive.
About Puerto Viejo
Puerto Viejo is a place with a strong Jamaican influence. In the streets you hear reggae music everywhere and the spicy smells fill your senses as soon as you leave your hotel. Most of the tourists who visit Puerto Viejo don’t come to dive. Enjoying the Caribbean past-times of relaxing and partying: that’s what it is all about.
Diving Puerto Viejo
Off the coast of Puerto Viejo is a huge reef which passes into an underground system of caves. The reef is damaged and bleached in parts. The water can be a bit turbid. Despite this there are plenty of fish and coral types to see. Just as along the entire east coast of Costa Rica you will come across manta-rays and nurse sharks. Be careful of the strong currents and spring tides in this region.
One dive school
In Puerto Viejo there is just one dive school, which has a limited range of rental equipment. The quality of the equipment is passable: the suits are a bit worn, but the regulators and BCDs are in good condition. In the low season, from September to November, it is always possible to rent gear on the spot. In the high season you would be better off reserving the equipment in advance.
Puerto Viejo Summary
Great relaxation, great partying, great diving
