Tobago

Laid-back island on the edge of the Caribbean.

Tobago offers a restful and relaxed atmosphere. The island is made up of hundreds of “secret” inlets. If you love drift diving then you have found your paradise.

About Tobago
Tobago is part of the Lesser Antilles and, together with Trinidad, makes up the country aptly named Trinidad and Tobago. The crime in Trinidad gives the wrong impression: the crime rates are no higher in Tobago than the Western average. This tiny volcanic island consists mainly of tropical rainforest. Inland it is quite hilly. All along the erratic coastline you will encounter idyllic bays with sandy beaches.

Short History
Columbus discovered this island in the Caribbean Sea and called it Bella Forma. The original inhabitants didn’t survive the discovery. The island changed hands 22 times and each left its mark. The last occupiers, Great Britain, joined Tobago together with Trinidad. Since 1952 Trinidad and Tobago has been an independent republic. There are many remnants from its colourful colonial past still visible on the streets.

Diving in Tobago
Tobago lies in the marginal area between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. There are fringe reefs made up of hard and soft corals all around the island. The currents can be strong and unpredictable. Tobago is renowned for its drift diving. The southern side of the island is calmer. Plankton-rich water provides the basis of a complex ecosystem, to which manta-rays and whale sharks also belong. This same plankton can make the water turbid, which sometimes results in disappointing visibility.
