Varadero is a tourist destination on the coast much as you will find all over the world. Nothing special or particularly Cuban: just hotels, sand and a lot of tourists.

About Varadero
Varadero welcomed the first tourists around 1870 and became known as the largest seaside resort in the Caribbean. Many famous people have holidayed here, including Mafia boss Al Capone. Varadero is also known as Playa Azul (blue beach). The beach, more than 20km long, is actually white. Varadero lies approximately 140km east of Havana, on the Hicacos Peninsula.

Diving Varadero
Varadero is one of the oldest dive resorts and a great departure point for diving expeditions. To the north of Point Hicacos lie no less than 6 wrecks. There are also dive spots closer to the shore. In reality, often there is too much wind to go out to sea. As an alternative, the dive operators travel south to dive in the Bay of Pigs. As such, it is a pretty spot, but it is a 3 hour drive. Inland you can experience cave diving in the Cueava de Saturno.
