Pulau Lankayan was declared a protected area in 2000. The waters surrounding the island offer a large biodiversity and pristine, healthy coral. Lankayan is a paradise for macro photographers.

Labuan is itself not a very attractive dive destination. If by chance you were there – on a business trip for example – then a wreck dive is certainly well worth the effort.

The longest fringing reef in the world

The Ningaloo reef is with regards to size and fame a bit dwarfed by the Great Barrier Reef at the other side of Australia, but it certainly is not less beautiful.

Diving Ningaloo reef
The protected Ningaloo marine park lies in front of the westcoast of Australia from Coral Bay in the south to Exmouth in the north. The Ningaloo Reef with its 260 km (160 miles) the largest fringing reef in the world. From 7 km (4 miles) to just 200 meters (600 feet) from the coast you can find numerous shallow dive spots at wonderful lagoons. The underwater life is extremely wealthy, with 500 species of fish, 600 species of molluscs and 500 species of coral. It is also visited by several sorts of sea turtles. Every year in March whale sharks migrate pass the reef.
