Paradise for cave divers

The Medes Islands, or Iles Medes, lie in a protected nature reserve and this is obvious: the water is literally bursting with life.

About the Medes Islands
Off the coast of L’Estartit lie the seven islands which together form the Medes Islands. Once a robbers’ den of mainly Algerian and Turkish pirates, these days it is an uninhabited and protected nature reserve. Fishermen are banned and the total number of fish is very high. Also outside of the nature reserve the fishermen do well. Other sources of income for (ex) fishermen: tourist cruises in glass bottom boats and taking divers to the perfect spots. The Medes Islands can best be reached from L'Estartit and L'Escala.

Diving the Medes Islands
Around these islands the water bursts with life: anchovies, bogue, damselfish, perch, mackerel, carp bream….The vertical and overhanging walls – 10 to 25 metres deep – are covered with corals and sea fans. Cave diving is one of the biggest attractions. Underwater ravines, caves and passageways have been formed by erosion of the underground limestone. Many passages lead under the islands. Here you will find lobsters, blood coral, orange cup coral, sponges and sea squirts.
