Australië door de ogen van een Australiër

Die anderhalve kilo reisgids in je rugzak blijft voorlopig onmisbaar. Je kunt niet voor alle details op willekeurige voorbijgangers vertrouwen. Maar de beste tips krijg je toch vaak van 'locals'. En daarom zijn we erg blij dat de Australische duikster - met Nederlandse roots - Kelly Van Der Kolk ons gevonden heeft. Als binnenkomer heeft ze alle beschrijvingen van Australische bestemmingen nagelopen en het artikel over Cairns verbeterd. Daarna vulde ze Diveheads aan met stukjes over Byron Bay en Julian Rocks, welke ik dankbaar vertaalde. En daar stopt ze niet...

Australië is een populair land om een maand of wat rond te trekken. En veel toeristen doen dat dan ook. Wat duiken betreft beperken ze zich vaak tot het Great Barrier Reef.  Ze laten op hun rondreis even goede kansen als het Ningaloo Reef links liggen. En aangezien deze topduikspots veel minder bekend en populair zijn, duik je hier wel een stuk rustiger. Local Kelly Van Der Kolk gaat de komende tijd nog veel meer van dit soort 'vergeten' bestemmingen bezoeken én beschrijven. Dus ben je van plan om Australië te bezoeken? Over Byron Bay
Byron Bay (of kortweg Byron) iligt aan de oostkust van Australië, in de provincie New South Wales, ongeveer 800 km ten noorden van Sydney en 180 km ten zuiden van Brisbane. Met ruim 300 accomodaties om uit te kiezen, zit er altijd iets voor je budget bij:  hostels, hotels, motels, apartmenten, huisjes, bed & breakfasts, resorts, campings en zelfs hele huizen. Byron is makkelijk te bereiken per vliegtuig, trein, bus en auto.

Het strandleven
Aan de kust bij Byron Bay ligt 30 km zandstrand, bekend om de prachtige omstandigheden voor golfsurfen. Aan een groot deel van het hoofdstrand kun je zwemmen onder het toeziende oog van badmeesters. Er zijn ook delen waar deze bescherming ontbreekt. Pas op als je hier het water in gaat, want er kan onderstroming zijn.

Dingen om te zien
In het hart van Byron - waar ook het treinstation staat - vind je de meeste pubs, café's, souvenier- en kledingwinkels. De bekendste bezienswaardigheid ligt echter buiten het centrum. Op het meest oosterlijke punt van Australië staat de vuurtoren van Byron Bay, gebouwd in 1901. De betonnen toren van 22 meter hoor is gebouwd in 1901. Zo'n 55 jaar later kreeg de toren lampen op electriciteit, waarna de vuurtoren van Byron de krachtigste van Australië werd.

Dingen om te doen
Op de eerste zondag van de maand vinden er in Byron markten plaats waar je organische groenten en handwerk kunt kopen. Straatkunstenaars en muzikanten - zoals jongleurs, dansers en didgeridoo spelers - zorgen voor een levendige sfeer. Naast surfen kun je vanuit Byron tal van outdooractiviteiten ondernemen: luchtballonvaren, deltavliegen en parachute springen. Blijf je liever op het water, dan kun je met een boot mee om walvissen te spotten of kajakken met dolfijnen.

Vanuit Byron Bay vertrekken dagtochten naar Julian Rocks, een beschermd natuurgebied op ongeveer 2.5 km van de kust.
